AUBURN – A man and woman were hurt and traffic was backed up for more than an hour Wednesday when two cars collided at the outer intersection Route 4 and Turner Street.
Vivian Briggs, 21, of Turner was taken to a Lewiston hospital after fire crews ripped apart her mangled car in order to free her from the wreck. Briggs spent a night at Central Maine Medical Center and was released Thursday.
The driver of the second car, Zachary Roy, 19, of Wilton was also examined for injuries suffered in the 5 p.m. crash.
None of the injuries were believed to be life-threatening. Police used surveillance cameras from a convenience store near the crash scene as they investigated the wreck.
Police said Briggs was pulling out of Turner Street and onto outer Center Street when the collision occurred. Video footage from the store camera shows Briggs at first turning right onto Center Street. She then changed directions and turned to the left, police said.
The delay caused Briggs to pull into the path of Roy’s car as he headed south on Center Street, police said.
The crash sent both cars spinning in the road and debris littered Center Street. Police took photographs and measurements at the crash scene as part of their investigation.
It was later discovered that cameras at Discount Smokes and Beverages at Center and Turner picked up the crash.
A section of Center Street near the intersection was closed to traffic as emergency vehicles responded and the cleanup began.
Police said no major problems arose as a result of the road closure at one of Auburn’s busiest areas for commuter traffic.
“We did our best to keep traffic moving,” said police Officer Andre Levesque, one of the investigating officers. “Unfortunately, it was during rush hour traffic.”
The car Briggs was driving, a Pontiac owned by Mary Briggs, was considered a total loss with damage estimated at $10,000. Damage to Roy’s Nissan was estimated at $6,000.
