NORWAY – Genevieve LeMoine, curator of the Peary MacMillan Arctic Museum at Bowdoin College, will present a public slide program on Robert Peary’s expedition to the North Pole at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 24, at the Norway Memorial Library on Main Street.

Included will be a discussion of Norway’s snowshoe makers and their connection to arctic exploration.

People may expect to hear about Mellie Dunham’s contribution to the 1909 expedition as well as the many snowshoes and other equipment made by Norway’s Snowcraft Co.

LeMoine, who has been at Bowdoin College since 1996, has a bachelor of arts from the University of Toronto, and a masters and doctoral degrees from the University of Calgary’s Department of Archaeology.

She has conducted archeological field work in various parts of the Arctic since 1986.

Her most recent project will involve field work this summer surveying Inglefield land on the northwest coast of Greenland, the area where Peary and MacMillan, as well as many other explorers, were frequently based.

Prior to the talk, books are available on Arctic exploration that can be checked out from the library as well as an article about Norway’s snowshoe industry. There is also a display of Norway Memorial Library’s special collection of Arctic materials in the glass case near the circulation desk. This includes Robert Peary’s book “The North Pole” and a biography of Donald B. MacMillan called “Arctic Odyssey.”

There is no charge for the program. Arctic-like refreshments will be served in keeping with the theme of the evening. For information phone the library at 743-5309.
