Selectmen will

ask Adelphia to provide free cable to Tri-Town ambulance.

WEST PARIS – The annual town meeting will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 6, at the Agnes Gray Elementary School gym, selectmen announced Thursday.

The decision was made after a majority of townspeople surveyed said they preferred a Saturday morning instead of a weeknight as some had requested for religious reasons.

A total of 1,000 surveys were sent to residents; 295 respondents wanted a Saturday morning; 161 wanted a Tuesday evening.

The responses were tallied in open meeting by ballot clerks Sandra Poland and Nancy Henderson.

Selectmen said they appreciated those who completed and returned the survey cards.

“It was a much bigger turnout than I had thought we would have out of the 1,000 surveys we mailed out,” Town Clerk Cheryl Shattenberg said.

In other business Thursday, selectmen agreed to contact Adelphia Communications to request that Tri-Town Ambulance and Rescue Service be added to to the list of local services that receive free cable.

“According to what I have learned, schools, fire departments and other services are allowed to be listed on the town’s contract,” Tri-Town Rescue Chief Norman St. Pierre said, “and we would like to be on the list if we can be added. Right now we have to pay the regular household fees and, as a nonprofit organization that runs quite a bit each year.”

After a brief discussion, board Chairman Wade Rainey said he had no objections. Selectmen Howard Gurney and Jim Johnston agreed.

It was decided to look into the possibility of closing the town office one day a week and and opening it on Saturday mornings.
