Attorney General G. Steven Rowe will be the keynote speaker.
AUBURN – The Sexual Assault Crisis Center will host a conference for the educators and school personnel of Androscoggin County in March. Those wishing to attend must register by Friday, Feb. 13.
“Sexual Violence: What Every School Community Should Know” will be presented between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. at St. Philip’s Church on Route 4.
Attorney General G. Steven Rowe will be the keynote speaker. Rowe will speak specifically to the issue of sexual violence in our school communities.
In the first session, workshops include:
• Child Sexual Abuse: Defining the Signs to Look For, presented by Peter Wigley of the Department of Human Services.
• Teen Voices Panel: Their Perspective, Area High School Teen Volunteers.
• Internet Safety, presented by Jim Rioux of the Lewiston Police Department Computer Crimes Task Force.
• The Bystander Approach, presented by Darcy Meo of the Sexual Assault Crisis Center.
Section two workshops include:
• Reporting Sexual Violence: Your Obligations and Liabilities, presented by Peter Wigley of the Department of Human Services.
• Understanding and Responding to the Sexual Behavior of Children, presented by Betsy Norcross Plourde of Advocates for Children.
• Rape Drugs and Drug Facilitated Rape, presented by Gerry Baril of the Maine Drug Enforcement Agency.
• Crisis Planning Within Your School Community, presented by Kathy Perry of the Sexual Assault Crisis Center.
Following lunch, the third and final section of workshops will include:
• Sexual Orientation and Sexual Violence, presented by Penny Sargent of Outright of Lewiston/Auburn.
• Media and Its Influence on Youth, presented by Darcy Meo of the Sexual Assault Crisis Center.
• Teen Power and Control Wheel Interactive Skits, performed by area high school teen volunteers.
• Civil Rights Teams: How to Start One, presented by Tom Harnett of the Attorney General’s Office.
The students of the Lewiston Regional Technology Center will provide lunch. Workshop participants will be eligible to win door prizes from Campus Cutters, Lewiston Adult Education and The Public Theatre.
