AUBURN – One hundred and twenty-seven students from Auburn schools attended the first Free Skate Wednesday on Feb. 4 at Ingersoll Arena.

Kristen Gilbert, school health coordinator for Auburn, a program of Healthy Androscoggin, said, “The number of children and parents who participated today is a true testament to the need for fun and physical after-school activities. Kids want to be active, they just need an accessible and affordable vehicle to do so.”

Gilbert was not alone in her efforts. Community member George Roy initiated the program idea and offered to pay for start-up costs.

“I’m concerned about kids and the health problems being inactive can cause. Opening the ice arena knocks downs barriers for kids to exercise,” said Roy. Roy donated all the ice time and 20 pairs of ice skates.

Peter Bushway of Ingersoll Arena agreed to a flat fee for the five-week program, Auburn Middle School Community Learning Center paid for the buses and Auburn PEACE Officer Tom Poulin is among the staff, parents and community members whose support and commitment have made the program possible.

“On behalf of the hundreds of kids who will benefit from this program for the next five weeks, I want to thank the many community organizations, individuals and Auburn staff who have helped to pursue this opportunity,” said Gilbert.

Free Skate Wednesday will run from noon to 2:30 p.m. every Wednesday until March 10 with the exception of school vacation week.

Anyone who has time, skates or new hats, mittens and socks to donate to the program is asked to contact Gilbert at 784-6431 or [email protected]. For more information on Healthy Androscoggin call 795-5990.
