Roger Smedberg’s three-year term expires in March.
OXFORD – There’s a time to come, and a time to go, said Selectman Roger Smedberg.
After 21 years serving the town, Smedberg has decided “Enough’s enough.” He decided two years ago this current term would be his last.
“It will be hard to walk away from it. But usually if I make up my mind I try to stick to it,” said Smedberg, who turns 67 this month.
Smedberg and Head Selectman David Ivey’s three-year terms expire in March. Ivey is running again, leaving the field wide open for at least one newcomer to win a seat on the five-member board.
Nominations will be taken from the floor at the March 13 town meeting. Residents expected to seek election are Lois Pike, Walt Mosher, Dennis Heino and Scott Lyons, according to Town Manager Mike Huston.
Smedberg said two years ago, “The town was hollering they wanted change, and I’m the last to go.”
Evan Thurlow retired two years ago after 39 years on the board, and longtime Selectman Caldwell Jackson stepped down last year.
The town is growing, and with growth comes growing pains, Smedberg said. “Mostly, I don’t want the obligation” that comes with the job, he said. “I appreciate all the support I’ve had, and I really have enjoyed it, even though it’s frustrating at times.”
