AUGUSTA – Hunters bagged 246 turkeys in Maine’s second ever fall archery turkey season this past fall. That’s 95 more wild gobblers than the 151 taken in the first fall season that debuted in 2002.

During the 2003 fall season, which ran from Oct. 20 through 31, both hens and toms are legal quarry, with a season bag limit of one bird, according to Mark Latti, spokesman for Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife.

Similar to 2002, the turkey harvest this past season was composed of 48 percent adult females, 28 percent juvenile birds and 19 percent adult males. The remaining 5 percent were of undetermined sex or age, Latti added.

Brunswick accounted for the greatest number of turkeys registered, with eight birds.

Other top turkey towns were Jefferson with six, and Saco, Waldoboro and Whitefield each with five.

Only archery equipment may be used during Maine’s fall turkey hunting season. Other requirements include an archery hunting license and a fall turkey permit.

The hunting success rate of the 1,859 hunters who purchased permits for the fall 2002 season was 8 percent. The total number of fall turkey permits sold in 2003 has yet to be tallied, Latti added.
