AUBURN – Members of the Fairview School’s fifth-grade math team received third place in team competition at the Portland Math Meet on Jan. 14.

Auburn teams representing Fairview, Sherwood Heights, Walton and Webster Schools traveled to the Portland Expo to compete with other central and southern Maine schools.

The teams were scored in three timed events, two individual rounds of arithmetic and geometry and one team round event of problem-solving.

Receiving a team trophy for third were Emily Grund, Alex Smith, Robert Cloutier, Robert Miller, Sam Cullen and Zachary Olstein. Olstein also received a second place individual award, and Smith received a third place individual award.

Sixth-grade team member Jeremy Theriault was awarded a second place trophy in individual competition, while teammate Steven Giorgetti placed fourth. All students are participants in Auburn’s math enrichment program facilitated by Carrie Beaulieu and Joan Simard.
