Kolzig blanks Hawks
CHICAGO – Olaf Kolzig stopped 38 shots for his second shutout this season and 33rd of his career to lead the Washington Capitals to a 4-0 victory over the Chicago Blackhawks on Sunday.
Peter Bondra and Stephen Peat scored 65 seconds apart early in the second period to give the Capitals a 2-0 lead. Matt Pettinger and Anson Carter added goals in the third to help Washington snap a three-game winless streak.
Craig Anderson made 29 saves for the Blackhawks, whose three-game winning streak ended.
Bondra opened the scoring at 5:34 of the second with a power-play goal. He lofted in a loose rebound past Anderson, who was down after making a save Sergei Gonchar’s drive from the blue line.
Peat made it a two-goal advantage when he fired a shot between Anderson’s legs from the slot. Peat was left uncovered and took a pass from Rick Berry.
An apparent goal by Washington’s Joel Kwiatkowki with 1:15 left in the second was disallowed by referee Dan O’Rourke. Anderson slid back into the net with the puck under his pads, but O’Rourke ruled the puck didn’t completely cross the goal line.
Oilers 2, Predators 2
NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Andreas Johansson had a goal and an assist, both on power plays, in the Nashville Predators’ 2-2 tie Sunday with the Edmonton Oilers.
Nashville took a 1-0 lead just 1:33 in when Scott Walker, while face down on the ice, stuck the puck past goaltender Tommy Salo from just to the left side of the net.
Edmonton tied it on the power play in the second period when Radek Dvorak fired a one-timer from the center of the ice just inside the blue line that scraped the right inside post and went in at 2:03.
Johansson put the Predators ahead again with seven minutes left in the period on a one-timer from the top of the slot.
Edmonton got even at 2 at 10:08 of the third period when Ethan Moreau skated in from the left wing, crossed in front of the net, and beat Tomas Vokoun with a backhander for the only goal scored at even strength.
Flames 2, Wild 1
ST. PAUL, Minn. – Robyn Regehr broke a tie 6:25 into the third period, and Miikka Kiprusoff allowed only a fluke goal Sunday in the Calgary Flames’ 2-1 victory over the Minnesota Wild.
Jarome Iginla scored his 29th goal for the Flames, who surpassed last season’s victory total by earning their 30th win of the season.
The game matched the NHL’s top two goaltenders in saves percentage, and Kiprusoff stopped 15 shots to outdo Minnesota’s Dwayne Roloson. Kiprusoff earned his third straight victory since returning last week after being out more than a month because of a strained knee.
Regehr broke a 1-1 tie with a wrist shot from the left point that sailed through the legs of teammate Martin Gelinas and past Roloson on the stick side. The power-play tally was Regehr’s third goal this season.
Iginla also scored on the power play, and the Flames went 2-for-6 with the man advantage. Craig Conroy set up the goal, feeding the puck from behind the Minnesota net past three Wild defenders.
Devils 3, Kings 2, OT
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. – Defenseman Paul Martin scored 3:53 into overtime, lifting the New Jersey Devils to a 3-2 victory against the Los Angeles Kings on Sunday.
The Stanley Cup champions have won two straight and they pulled within two points of Ottawa and Boston for fourth place in the Eastern Conference. The Devils snapped a three-game losing streak with a 4-1 win over Carolina on Saturday.
The Devils fell behind 2-0 in the first period before rallying.
Recently recalled center Pavel Rosa, playing his first NHL game this season, scored his first NHL goal in five years when his backhander sneaked past Martin Brodeur at 7:34.
Brodeur tried to stop the rolling puck with his stick and blocker, but the shot trickled in for Rosa’s fifth career goal. Rosa played sparingly for the Kings in 1998-99, spent two years in Finland, and only played two games last season.
Two minutes later, defenseman Tomas Zizka, playing in only his eighth game of the season, scored during a power play for his first NHL goal. Zizka fired a shot toward the net and the drive deflected off Devils defenseman Scott Niedermayer and in at 10:00. Rosa was credited with an assist.
The Devils cut the lead to 2-1 before the end of the first period, when Sergei Brylin converted on a power-play chance for his 11th goal of the season.
Jamie Langenbrunner tied it midway through the second period with his eighth goal, right after a roughing penalty to Kings forward Sean Avery expired.
Turner Stevenson just missed winning the game in the closing minute of regulation, when his shot trickled just to the right of Kings goalie Roman Cechmanek, who made 32 saves.
Brodeur stopped 24 saves to earn his 27th victory this season.
