GREENVILLE (AP) – For the second time in three days, a pair of snowmobiles crashed through the ice on Moosehead Lake. No serious injuries were reported in either incident.

The latest crash took place shortly before 6 p.m. Monday at East Outlet, 10 miles north of Greenville.

Fred Russell, 58, of Bangor and his son John, 29, of Bernville, Pa., were riding in the middle of the channel when they plunged into the water, said Sgt. Pat Dorian of the Maine Warden Service.

The father and son were able to get themselves onto the ice as their machines sank in the ten- to 12-foot water. The two were treated for hypothermia, Dorian said.

On Saturday night, two men were rescued at West Outlet when their snowmobiles went through ice.

Dorian said there was plenty of solid ice on the lake, but the increased sunshine was causing inlets and outlets to open up a bit.

“If you’re running in the nighttime, don’t go anyplace you’re not familiar with,” he said. “That’s the mistake these folks are making.”
