1933 – 2004

AVON – Roger Melvin Hood, 71, of Avon passed away Feb. 13, at his home, with his loving family and his companion of 33 years, Elaine Romanoski at his bed side. He fought a nine-month battle with cancer and all the while he had a super attitude and maintained his sense of humor till the very end.

Born in Phillips, Jan. 19, 1933, the son of Harry C. and Margaret (Harnden) Hood, he attended schools in Phillips.

Standing 6’4” he was a mighty man and was well known for his ability to work with heavy equipment, having worked for Peter Tyler for 15 years with an excavator. He was a volunteer firefighter with the Town of Phillips for many years and police officer in Whitman, Mass., in his younger years.

He loved to hunt and fish and go ATV riding with Elaine and his family. He was a very thoughtful and selfless man, he liked to please everyone. When he was 16, he entered the National Guard protecting the German prisoners of war in Bangor.

Survivors include his mother, Margaret Wilson of Farmington; a brother, Malcolm Hood and his wife, Judy of Florida; a son, Scott Hood and his wife, Flora of Strong; a daughter, Patty Dyar and her husband, Scott of Strong; three sisters, Evelyn Carson and her husband, Gerald of Strong, Nora Therrian and her husband, Jeffery of Temple and Rosanna Kingsley and her husband, David of Brocton, Mass.; his extended family, Vernon, Troy, Shawn and Shain Romanoski, all of Strong; six grandchildren, Stephanie Hood, Richard Parker, Derick Hemingway, Cody Hemingway, Joseph Dyer and Friday Dyer; two great-grandchildren, Brandon Hemingway and Sophie Hemingway; several special grandchildren, Ridge, Luke, Reilly and Xavier Romanoski; his loving companion, Elaine Romanoski; his very dear friend, Richie Snarski; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by his father, Harry Hood; his little brother, Melvin Hood; and an infant daughter, Jean Marie Hood.
