Three positions on the lunch staff have been reinstated.

JAY – A survey to gauge school food service quality indicates between 75 and 89 percent of students responding think meals were satisfactory or better in the past month.

Students, parents and staff returned nearly 20 percent or 191 of 1,000 surveys sent out.

The surveys were distributed after the School Committee voted to eliminate the bakery and reduce hours to make the program self-sufficient.

A citizen-initiated petition put the issue before voters last month and residents agreed to spend money for the program.

School Committee members voted Thursday to reinstate the three positions eliminated and reduced hours through June 16.

There is no money allotted in a nearly $11 million school spending proposal to keep the positions on or increase the hours next school year.

The bakery and staffing changes took effect Dec. 31. Parents and teachers noted Thursday it would have been a truer survey if it was conducted in February rather than January.

The responses about meals from 27 students at the elementary school were: 15 percent, excellent; 37 percent, very good; 37 percent, satisfactory; 11 percent, fair.

The responses from 39 students at the middle school were: 8 percent, excellent; 41 percent, very good; 26 percent, satisfactory; 26 percent, fair.

The responses from 30 high school students were: 20 percent, very good; 43 percent, satisfactory; 37 percent, fair.

The responses from 36 parents at the elementary school were: 17 percent, excellent; 53 percent, very good; 25 percent, satisfactory; 6 percent, fair.

The responses from 14 middle school parents were: 36 percent, very good; 36 percent, satisfactory; 29 percent, fair.

The responses from three high school parents were: 67 percent, very good; 33 percent, satisfactory.

The responses from 19 elementary school staff were: 26 percent, excellent; 26 percent, very good; 16 percent, satisfactory; 32 percent, fair.

The responses from 14 middle school staffers were: 29 percent, excellent; 36 percent, very good; 21 percent, satisfactory; 14 percent, fair.

The responses from nine high school staff members were: 33 percent, excellent; 22 percent, very good; 44 percent, satisfactory.
