FARMINGTON – The American Red Cross bloodmobile will visit Farmington when Franklin Memorial Hospital sponsors a blood drive from 1 to 6 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 24, in the Bass Room at the hospital.

“We are strongly encouraging donors to attend,” says Thomas Miller. “Poor winter weather is a double-edged sword when it comes to the blood supply. It increases both the potential for serious accidents at a time when it sometimes causes the cancellation of blood drives. Giving blood now will help us get through the tough times.”

Maine hospitals use approximately 300 to 350 pints of blood daily. It’s used for surgery, accidents, chemotherapy, kidney dialysis and many other life-threatening conditions.

First-time volunteer donors are urgently needed to replace donors who have moved away or become ineligible to donate, according to organizers of the blood drive.

Potential donors must be at least 17 years old, in generally good health and must weigh at least 110 pounds. There is no longer an upper age limit to donate blood.
