A 14-year-old boy was also involved.
NEWRY – Police are investigating the death of a 39-year-old woman from Falmouth who was struck by another skier at Sunday River ski resort on Thursday.
Jane McCormack of Middle Road died of head injuries at Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston, Deputy Brian Landis of the Oxford County Sheriff’s Department said Friday.
The second-grade teacher at Reiche School in Portland was standing at the intersection of Heat’s On and Jibe trails on White Cap peak between noon and 1 p.m. when a 14-year-old boy from Dover, Mass., came down Jibe Trail and struck her, Landis said.
A male friend of McCormack’s witnessed the accident, he said.
McCormack was taken to the Bethel airport and flown by helicopter to Lewiston, where she was pronounced dead.
Sunday River spokesman Jim Costello said neither skier was wearing a helmet.
The boy had minor injuries, Landis said.
The accident is under investigation, and it is not known if a criminal conduct charge will be brought, the deputy advised. The juvenile’s name was not being released.
It was the first skiing death at Sunday River in more than three years, Costello said.
