RUMFORD – Allan V. “Ike” Mooney, 85, of Rumford passed away Friday, Feb. 20, at his home in Rumford.

He was born Jan. 25, 1919, in Peake’s Station, Prince Edward Island, Canada, the son of Philip and Margaret Curran Mooney. He was educated in Peakes schools, and enlisted in the Canadian Army as a young man.

Following his military service, he relocated to the Rumford area with other family members. He was employed by Maine Central Railroad with more than 30 years service.

He was a staunch Irishman and was proud of his Irish heritage. He owned, trained and raced horses, a great interest in his life. He became an avid fan of school sports, and never missed a football game or wrestling meet in which his grand-nephews were participating.

In later years, he enjoyed playing cards, and rallied for an afternoon of poker with his buddies at the Elks the day before his death. He said he had a good day at the table.

Prior to his decline in health, he was a great help and source of advice and support to many people. He will be sorely missed.

He was a communicant of St. Athanasius-St. John Church in Rumford and was also a member of BPOE #862 Elks and FOE #1248.

Survivors include his nieces, Mary Lou Peterson and her family of Rumford, Joyce Kane and Peg Fraser and their families of Portland, Barbara Pride and her amily of Ennis, Mont., and Jackie Rouleau and her family of Winter Springs, Fla.; numerous relatives throughout Canada; lifetime friend, Ray Potvin of Norway; and caregiver, Faye Cureton of Rumford.
