JAY – A woman caught on a store security surveillance tape Sunday is being sought by Jay police. The woman is wanted on theft and vehicle burglary charges.

A heavyset woman with dark hair wearing eye glasses and a dark bulky coat was seen pushing a grocery cart piled high with items including Angel Soft toilet paper and a large bag of cat food out the Hannaford door into the foyer.

It was her second attempt to get to the door. A few minutes before she went to leave but an employee was walking toward a checkout aisle and she turned the carriage around. When the employee became busy, she walked quickly through the doors and into the foyer.

An employee saw her and went after her. She is seen pushing the cart back in and going up and down the aisles slowly, occasionally glancing up at where video cameras would be.

The woman parked the cart near the restrooms and went into the ladies’ room. A few minutes later, she came out and never looked at the cart and walked slowly toward the exit door, picking up the pace when she got closer.

Police now say the woman allegedly burglarized two vehicles in the lot after leaving the store.

This is the second time police have been called to Hannaford in connection with an unidentified woman filling up a grocery cart with items and leaving the store.

In January, a woman left the store with more than $200 in groceries and was not caught.

But surveillance cameras captured her on tape.

Police were comparing tapes Monday to see if the woman who stole the groceries in January is the same one they’re looking for in Sunday’s incident.

Police are asking anyone who recognizes the woman in the photo to call either Chief Larry White Sr. or Cpl. Jeffrey Fournier at 897-6766.
