TOGUS – George W. Stevens Jr., 78, of 70 Blake St. Towers, Lewiston, died Thursday, Feb. 19, at the Maine Veterans Hospital following a short illness.

Born in New London, Conn., Aug. 26, 1925, the son of George W. and Alma (Armstrong) Stevens, he had been a resident of this community since 1981, coming from Southington, Conn.

He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Navy. He was a member of SS. Peter and Paul Church, former member of the American Legion Post 22 and Lewiston Senior Citizens.

His hobbies included doing crossword and jigsaw puzzles. He was an avid walker. He was married to the former Rilda Madore on Feb. 13, 1967, and she died on March 6, 1997.

Survivors include two stepsons, Roland Girardin and his wife, Aleta of Lewiston and Roger Girardin and his wife, Danielle of Poland Spring; one stepdaughter, Rolande Breton and her husband, Roger of Lewiston; one brother, Albert Stevens of Connecticut; 15 stepgrandchildren; 14 stepgreat-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
