The superintendent plans “a cycle of replacement.”

RANGELEY – The Rangeley School Committee met Tuesday to discuss the proposed $1.6 million budget, which does not include money for capital improvements, facility renovations or new computers.

Superintendent Kenneth Coville presented an additional computer infrastructure budget of $25,844, of which $2,500 would be federal technology money and $12,500 from the Rural Education Achievement Fund.

The project includes buying 34 new computers, network hardware and software and a computer projector.

New computers would replace six classroom and six teacher computers and add 22 new ones to the lab and library. The budget would “begin a cycle of replacement,” Coville said.

The school’s oldest computers would be replaced, and computers would be redistributed based on usage and technology needs of classrooms.

The committee also considered several minor capital improvements to be added to the 2004-2005 budget. Coville will be gathering cost estimates for backboard safety restraints for the gym, an evaluation of the school’s roof, repairs to the bleachers, replacement of lockers and shower stalls and replacement of the front entryway flooring.

In addition, the committee hopes to complete window repairs and to winterize/freeze protect the school’s heating system, in case of a power outage.

The Committee granted approval for several student trips. Music teacher Erin Smith and nine choir students will travel to Portland on March 20 to hear the Portland Symphony Orchestra.

Teachers Seth LaLiberty and Nini Christiansen will have 10 students with them for a three-day, two-night outdoor camping and survival trip in New Sharon. The trip will teach students about how to stay safe in the woods, build a fire, and how to use a map and compass.

The high school Jazz Combo will travel to the All State Jazz Festival in Westbrook on March 19 and 20 with teacher Mike Schrader.

It was announced that Rangeley senior Jimmy Goodwin ended his high school basketball career with 1,001 points and junior Sarah Schrader was chosen as the western division’s most valuable player.

The Rangeley girls basketball team will compete for the state championship at 1:05 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 28, at the Augusta Civic Center.

The committee’s next meeting is at 6 p.m. March 9 at the school.
