On Feb. 19, I attended a hockey game between the Lewiston Maineiacs and Oceanic at our newly revamped, re-mortgaged and renamed Colisee. Although the Maineiacs did not win the game, it was exciting, fun and heartwarming to see the level of participation and support in and from the community.

Friends and family from the Portland area were in attendance and they were impressed with, and enjoyed the festivities and changes, vowing to become regular customers.

However, when they got to their car, there was a $10 ticket on it. It was parked on Baron Avenue. I am a law-abiding, tax-paying citizen, but I think it is foolish and foolhardy for the city to work against itself. We need to welcome every patron who comes to our town to attend the Maineiacs games. We need to welcome all who attend other events held in the Colisee, otherwise local taxpayers will end up with the burden of paying the loan.

The police have a job to do to enforce the law and keep our citizens safe, but while the games are in session the city needs to make accommodations, especially when the games are sold out and there is no place to park. People were not blocking driveways or double-parked or parked in front of fire hydrants. People need to feel welcome when they attend so they will come back.
