CHESTERVILLE – Whether the town’s treasurer should be appointed or elected is expected to be the hottest issue at this town’s annual meeting.

Last year, Chesterville residents raised $310,751 and this time around will decide on a proposed $324,381 spending package, said Town Clerk Patricia Gordon.

Chesterville has a population of 1,170, but usually only 80 to 100 people show up to tackle the warrant, which has 53 articles this year, the clerk said.

The article that should draw the most discussion is whether the town treasurer should be appointed by selectmen.

Currently, the treasurer is elected each year. Gordon said that if the article passes, it would be more convenient because the treasurer wouldn’t have to run for office each year.

The position has been held by Ruth Archer for years.

Residents will also decide whether to increase Code Enforcement Officer Brenda Medcoff’s hours. Gordon says Medcoff works around four hours a week now, but the town would like to set the hours at 10 because there is so much work.

“It’s becoming more demanding,” Gordon explained, “because of all the development in town.”

About $66,000 is proposed to be raised for reconstruction of six roads.

Other than that, Gordon said, “It’s pretty much business as usually. It’s pretty basic,” she said.

Earlier that day, residents will cast their ballots in two races. Incumbent David Archer is running unopposed for a three-year selectmen position and incumbent Wanda Soule is faced with competition from Charisse Keach for a three-year position as the town’s representative to the SAD 9 School Board.
