GORHAM – Sophomore Megan Myles of Turner tallied a game and season-high 19 points, while senior Jen Webster added 14 points and 10 rebounds, as the University of Southern Maine posted an easy 73-47 win over Husson College in the opening round of the NCAA Division III Women’s Basketball Tournament Wednesday night at Warren G. Hill Gymnasium.

USM will host Salem State College in a second-round game Saturday afternoon (2 p.m.). The Huskies improved their school-record winning streak to 25 consecutive games and improved to 28-1. Husson concludes the year at 23-6.

The Braves built a 3-0 lead at 19:11 on a lay up from freshman Annie McIntosh of New Gloucester and a single free throw from freshman Crystal Martin.

USM went up by as many as 61-30 on another long three-pointer from Shannon Kynoch with 11:30 to play, while the Braves could trim the deficit to no fewer than 45-22 on a three-pointer from sophomore Sarah Davis just 29 seconds into the half.

The Huskies connected on 26-56 (.516) field goal attempts, and limited the Braves to 19 baskets on 51 shots (.373). USM additionally held a 37-30 edge on the boards and forced Husson into 25 turnovers, while committing 17.

The Braves were led by Shauna Mullenix, who tallied nine points, while Crystal Martin, Davis and sophomore Holly Gracie added eight points apiece.
