Two selectmen seats are available.

CANTON – Voters in Canton will be choosing two selectmen from among five candidates Saturday, March 13.

Selectmen Susan Gammon and Tammy Richardson are not seeking re-election.

The candidates are James Adley, William Bryant Sr., Lisa Cummings, Donald Hutchins and Philip Klingman.

Bryant, a paper mill retiree, said he has a lot of free time. Having served as selectman two or three times, he knows how much time it takes, he said. He has also served as fire chief and animal control officer.

He has been either selectman or fire chief during the worst of the floods over the years and realizes the town must do something to get out of the flood zone.

“This is the time to do it,” he said.

Adley served as selectman in the 1990s for a three-year term. He said he has the time to devote to the job. He said thinks the school merger with Peru would be good for saving money, which is one of his goals.

He has served on the Budget Committee and was vice president of the Oxford County Municipal Officers Association. He praised the town for the volunteers because “they are the backbone of our country.”

Cummings said this is her third time to run for selectman.

She served the town on the Budget Committee. She has a daughter at Canton elementary school and said she thinks the merger would be wonderful for the kids to give them more opportunities.

Hutchins will be trying for the second time to find a place on the board. He has a child in school and a newborn at home. He supports the school merger and the Comprehensive Plan, he said.

“I believe if more people become involved in a community, the stronger it becomes,” he said. He works for the Maine Department of Transportation.

Klingman could not be reached for comment.

Planning Board incumbent Donald Adams will seek another three-year term. Margery Sudbay is uncontested for the seat vacated by Kathy Hutchins, who is not seeking re-election.

No one is running for the two Budget Committee vacancies.

Incumbent Craig Gammon is running uncontested for road commissioner for one year.

John Blancato is resigning as a SAD 21 director and Scott Verrill is running for one of two vacancies.

The polls will be open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday, March 12, at the Canton Municipal Building.
