CANTON – Clinton Conant, chairman of the Canton Town Committee, has announced that Canton Republicans will caucus at 6:30 p.m. March 9, at the Canton Municipal Building. The purpose of the caucus is to elect delegates and alternates to the Republican State Convention, elect members of the Oxford County Republican Committee, and organize for the upcoming elections. All Canton Republicans are urged to attend this event. The State Convention will be held May 14 and 15 in Augusta.

GOP recruitment

BETHEL – Daniel Schuberth of Bowdoin College and Andrew Simon of Bates will speak on their success this year in registering Republicans and organizing Republican campaign workers for the November election at the March 9 meeting of the Oxford County Republican Committee at the Methodist Church on Main Street.

The social hour will begin at 5:30 p.m. with a chicken potpie dinner at 6:30, followed by the speakers and business meeting. Reports on candidate recruitment, fund-raising, campaign organization and the success of the Lincoln Day Dinner will be heard. All area Republicans are being urged to attend.

The April meeting will be in Oxford on April 13, with 2nd Congressional District candidate Brian Hamel as the speaker.

Time Capsule sealed

DIXFIELD – The Dixfield Bicentennial Committee and Historical Society sealed the town’s Time Capsule on March 1. A plaque commemorating the date was fastened to the top of the capsule with instructions to open it on Jan. 1, 2104. A handmade Christmas ornament, newspaper articles, genealogy, family photos and a 2003 journal of town affairs were some of the many items included. The time capsule was locked, and will be on display at the Dixfield Historical Society for the next 100 years.

RUMFORD – SeniorsPlus began its March for Meals penny drive March 1. During March, Meals on Wheels programs across the nation will be raising money for local Meals on Wheels services. SeniorsPlus operates the Meals on Wheels program in this area. The cost to provide one home-delivered meal is $5.84. Now, the agency has 53 people on a waiting list who can’t get Meals on Wheels because there is not enough money to provide them. “Every penny does count,” said Kim Chaisson, meal site manager. “It doesn’t take much to meet this basic need.” SeniorsPlus is located on Congress Street in Rumford, directly across from the Rumford House of Pizza. Grief support group

MEXICO – A meeting for people who have suffered the loss of a loved one and need a way to express their feelings safely and confidentially will be held Tuesdays at the Mexico Congregational Church, 163 Main St. The meetings will be held from 9:30 to 11 a.m. beginning March 16. Basketball game

DIXFIELD – Dirigo’s National Honor Society presents students vs. teachers basketball game Thursday, March 18, at Dirigo High School. First game begins at 6 p.m. followed by a second game at 7 p.m. Doors will open at 5:30 p.m. Cost for adults is $3 and students $2. Refreshments will be available and there will be a 50/50.

Lobster lunch

RUMFORD – Rumford Area Rotary’s first Lobster Lunch of the year is slated for March 22. Rotarians will deliver or fax order sheets to local businesses and offices. Once filled out, the orders can be faxed to Lobster Lunch Chairman Greg Trundy. Lunches are $7 and include a lobster salad roll, chips, a brownie or other goodie and soft drink of the luncher’s choice. Lunches are delivered directly to workplaces by Rotary volunteers. Proceeds from the Lobster Lunch contribute directly to the Rotary’s Scholarship Fund for higher education-bound high school seniors and its donations to local charities.
