MONMOUTH – A toddler killed in a wreck on Route 202 Tuesday was identified a day later as 18-month-old Cassandra Dee Howe.
The girl died after a logging truck slammed into the car she was riding in as it crossed Route 202 from Blue Rock Road, a short distance from her home.
Cassandra was the daughter of Arthur and Debra Howe, who live on Blue Rock Road. However, the car she was riding in was driven by her grandmother, 58-year-old Dorothy Kemp of Monmouth.
Kemp was taken to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston where she was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit on Tuesday night. Hospital officials were not releasing information about Kemp on Wednesday at the request of her family.
Monmouth police said the girl was secured in a baby seat in the back of a Ford Focus at the time of the noon crash.
The logging truck, which was not hauling a load at the time, forced the car into a ditch on the other side of the road, police investigators said.
The truck was driven by Charles Baker, 57, of Winthrop. He was not injured in the crash. Investigators said it appeared Baker tried to stop his truck before it collided with the car.
Friends of the Howe family said Cassandra’s parents were driving behind Kemp’s car in another vehicle when the crash occurred.
According to an obituary, the girl had a brother as well as several relatives who live in the Monmouth, Leeds and Winthrop areas.
