1923 – 2004

BRUNSWICK – Clifford P. Tinkham, 80, of Foster Point Road, West Bath died Wednesday, March 10, at a Brunswick Hospital.

He was born in Livermore Falls on June 13, 1923, the son of Clifford B. and Stella (Flanders) Tinkham. In 1940, he graduated from Livermore Falls High School. On April 19, 1944, he married Audrey Nelson. He received his B.S. degree in 1947, and his masters in 1954, from U. M. O. in Orono.

He entered the United States Army Air Force during World War II and served as a Captain and pilot of a B-17 Bomber. While there and stationed at Thurleigh, England he flew 35 missions over Europe and was awarded an air medal with four oak leaf clusters.

He was employed as Principal of Bridgton High School, Supt. of Schools at Mt. Desert Island School Union in Bar Harbor and later as Supt. of Schools for West Bath and Bath retiring in 1978. He then became the Assistant Supt. of School Union 75 in Topsham until 1985.

He was a member of the United Church of Christ Cong. in Bath, served as President of Maine School Supt. Assoc. in 1972, President of the Bath Rotary Club from 1974 to 1975, the action committee of Maine School Mngt. Assoc., chairman of the Bath Housing Authority from 1978 to 1988, member of Masonic Bodies, the Kora Temple Shrine in Lewiston, life member of the Bath Lodge of Elks where he served as treasurer, member of the Maine Retirees Assoc., former member of the Down East Yacht Club, the Maine Maritime Museum in Bath.

He is survived by his wife, Audrey Nelson Tinkham of West Bath; one son, William N. Tinkham and his wife Donna of Bath; one daughter, Patricia Taggart and her husband Walter of West Bath; one daughter-in-law, Jean Tinkham of Portland; and five grandchildren.

He was predeceased by one son, John Tinkham in 1991.
