LOCKE MILLS – Recent activities of unit 68 included taking part in the Four Chaplains Service in February and distributing valentines to veterans at Ledgeview and the Western Maine Veterans Home in South Paris.

At the meeting on March 4, donations were voted to Children’s Miracle Network and to Camp Tall Pines. A nominating committee has been appointed by President Martha Stowell as it will soon be time to elect a new slate of officers.

March 18 will be the annual celebration of the birth of the American Legion. The organization was founded in France on March 17, 1919, by servicemen still there after World War I, making the upcoming birthday the 85th. On the 18th the auxiliary will have a 6 p.m. supper to celebrate.

On Memorial Day weekend this year the World War II Memorial will be dedicated in Washington, D.C. Jeri Greenwell of Bethel is heading the National Auxiliary Committee to organize events. Plans will be made to see how this unit can join with local communities in celebrations to honor the brave men and women of that conflict.

This auxiliary is joining with Franklin Grange in Bryant Pond to have a benefit supper and dance for Calla and Jeff Tyler who lost their home on Paris Road in South Bethel to fire this winter. This will be on April 3 at the Legion Hall in Locke Mills. The Richard Felt band will be playing for the dance. Cost will be $6 for adults, $3 under age 13. Any local or area businesses which would be willing to donate items for raffles or door prizes would be appreciated.
