TILTON, N.H. (AP) – Most town meetings focus on ways to shave a few dollars off the budget. But this year voters debated a measure that involved shaving a man’s head.

Pat Clark has spent the last two years trying to persuade Tilton officials to turn an abandoned riverfront mill site into a park. This year he promised that if the measure passed, he would shave his head at Town Meeting.

On Saturday the measure to spend $600,000 on the park made it 136-47, and the clippers came out. “This is like extreme makeover, Tilton style,” said Town Clerk Cindy Reinartz, who played beautician. “Should we leave the comb-over? Should we take a vote on that?”

Despite Clark’s offer, some voters opposed the measure, saying the land involved is destined for a site that is undergoing environmental cleanup by local, state and federal authorities.

Michelle Jackson said that until that cleanup is done the town should not commit any money to future work. She also said the price was too high.

The measure was amended to say the money would not be spent until the cleanup was complete.

Organizers now must come up with another $500,000 to get the park built. They already have just over $200,000 of it.
