Alexandre Picard showed off a new hairdo Friday night against Baie-Comeau, taking his helmet off to reveal a blond mohawk. The spiky-haired leading scorer has been enticing the rest of his teammates to follow suit for the playoffs, but so far has found no takers.

“I don’t know,” said defenseman Bobby Gates. “I’m not really ruling it out, yet, but I am not going to be the next one to do it.”

In an alternate hairdo, Jonathan Paiement revealed a series of braids that his billet mother says took nearly three hours to complete. The colorful beads caused Paiement’s hair to stand on end during player introductions Friday.

According to his billet mother, the rest of the team was going to evaluate that style and get back to him.

Either way, the team has simple competition to beat. All last year’s Sherbrooke Castors did was dye their hair orange.

Big deal.

Still, several of the players with longer hair, notably Francis Trudel and Maxime Robert, are reluctant to chop off their mops, even if it is for the playoffs.

The four teams coach Mario Durocher considers to be the best in the league are Nos. 1, 2, 4 and 5 in the general standings for the playoffs, and all four have better records than the automatic No. 3 Rimouski.

Since Gatineau and Cape Breton will get byes, Moncton and P.E.I. will be the best two teams playing in the first round.

The Moncton-Baie-Comeau matchup could be a farce. The Drakkar are a physical team, but they cannot do much of anything else. They are a slow offensive club and will have trouble scoring on Corey Crawford, who should see most of the time in net for the Wildcats.

In Prince Edward Island, the Rocket will square off against Quebec. P.E.I. is a classic trap team coached by a classic trap coach in Alain Vigneault, and will pose serious problems for the Remparts, especially without the services of Josh Hennessy.

Still, should the Remparts’ offense get into the flow of things, they could make a series out of it.

The other series featured the Voltigeurs of Drummondville against Shawinigan, and Chicoutimi with its gaudy home record against Val d’Or.
