FARMINGTON – A forum on land use challenges facing rural Maine is planned at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 18, in Roberts Learning Center, Room 23, at the University of Maine at Farmington.

The town of Farmington and the Western Mountains Alliance are hosting the forum, which is open to the public.

Information on sprawl as well on the work of the newly formed GrowSmart Maine will be given by Evan Richert, who headed the State Planning Office during the King administration and chairs GrowSmart Maine, and Alan Caron, president of GrowSmart and a public affairs consultant with expertise in public policy work.

“In a time of great change and shifting land-use patterns, we need to use multiple strategies to create the futures we desire for our rural Maine communities. Richert and Caron have much to offer us through their experience and expertise,” says Alliance Director Deb Burd.

GrowSmart Maine advocates for new solutions to sprawl and provides planning tools to mobilize and engage other organizations to promote smart growth.

Established in 1988, the Western Mountains Alliance strives to strengthen the regional identity of the western mountains region of Maine. For more information, people can contact Burd at 778-7274.
