FARMINGTON – The University of Maine Farmington celebrates Women’s History month with its annual Women in History Banquet on Thursday, March 18. The banquet will be held in the North Dining Hall in Olsen Student Center. Dinner begins at 6:30 p.m. with a lecture to follow.
The guest speaker is Lebanese-American feminist performance artist and scholar Dr. Laila Farah. Farah’s performance, Living in the Hyphen-Nation, is a response to the institutional racism enacted by the American government, particularly following the events of Sept. 11. The performance focuses on racial profiling and the general demonization of Muslims, Arabs, Muslim-Americans and Arab-Americans. Tickets are $12 and are available at Mickey’s Hallmark and Calico Patch as well as by calling the Women’s Studies Center at 778-7387.
The event is sponsored by the University of Maine at Farmington’s Women’s Studies Program with assistance from the president’s office, Office of Student Life, Diversity Committee, Department of Business and Social Sciences, Writer’s Guild, Film Club and the History Society.
