PARIS – All-in-all mathematics teacher Allen Geery thinks things went pretty well for the Oxford Hills Comprehensive High School math team.
He thought this was gong to be a rebuilding year after last year’s team placed third in the state.
This year there were only four seniors on the 11-student team.
Last week they wrapped up their Pi-Cone North title, ending the year with 1,211 points, while the nearest competitor, Lewiston High School, had 685 points.
Statewide, OHCHS was the eighth best this year.
“Anytime we can finish in the top 10 I feel good,” Geery said. “By winning Pi-Cone North, we realize that we can be competitive in the New England Championship Meet.”
The state meet will be held at the Cumberland County Civic Center on April 13 and the New England Championships are set for April 30 in Canton, Mass.
Leading the league in scoring for the year was OHCHS senior Sienna Tinsley, who had 214 points. Her teammate Fred Schwaner was third with 182 points.
OHCHS’s Ashley Millett was fourth in the league’s top seniors, decided by not counting scores from the top four performers overall, with 133 points.
Three of the top four juniors in the league were from OHCHS. Placing second to fourth were: Joshua Twitchell, Sarah Ladner and Jennifer Dowling.
Freshmen David Harbage and Joshua Grenier placed first and fourth, respectively.
“They have been an enjoyable group of kids to work with,” Geery said. “They don’t just sit around and study math. They are very busy. Many of the kids participate in drama, music and some work.
“I’m very proud of what they have accomplished,” he said.
