COLUMBUS, Ohio – Amber Jacobs scored 17 points and Boston College held Ohio State scoreless for eight minutes of the second half Monday night in a 63-48 victory in the second round of the NCAA tournament.
The third-seeded Eagles (27-6) advanced to play either Minnesota or Kansas State in the Mideast Regional semifinals Sunday in Norfolk, Va.
Jacobs hit five of seven shots from the field, including three of four 3-pointers, and all four free throws. She also had five assists and four rebounds.
Kathrin Ress added 16 points and Jessalyn Deveny had 15 for the Eagles, who reached the round of 16 for the second year in a row. Brandie Hoskins led the sixth-seeded Buckeyes (21-10) with 16 points, and Caity Matter had 10.
After eight lead changes and six ties, the Eagles slowly pulled away midway through the second half.
Ohio State, playing on its own campus, had beaten West Virginia in Saturday’s opening round by pounding the ball inside to 6-foot-5 Jessica Davenport and 6-3 LaToya Turner. Davenport had 22 points and Turner added 10 points and 11 rebounds in the 73-67 win.
But Boston College all but eliminated the Buckeyes’ inside game, overplaying Davenport underneath and surrounding her with defenders whenever she received a pass.
Vanderbilt 60, Chattanooga 44
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – Carla Thomas had 15 points, 11 rebounds and six blocks, and Vanderbilt beat Chattanooga 60-44 to advance to the round of 16.
The second-seeded Commodores (26-7) are in the regional semifinals for the 11th time and will face either Stanford or Oklahoma.
Chattanooga (29-3), playing on its home court as the 10th seed in the Midwest Regional, extended its streak to 27 with a 74-69 victory over No. 7 seed Rutgers in the first round.
Tennessee 79, DePaul 59
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Tennessee cruised into the NCAA’s round of 16 for the 23rd straight year with a 79-59 victory over DePaul in the Midwest Regional. Shanna Zolman scored 18 points in the first half for the top-seeded Lady Vols, who were up by as many as 27 before halftime.
Georgia 85, TCU 71
PHILADELPHIA – Christi Thomas had 19 points and 12 rebounds, and Jessica Pierce added 18 points to lead Georgia to an 85-71 victory over TCU in the second round of the NCAA tournament. The third-seeded Bulldogs (24-9) advanced to the round of 16 for the 14th time in 21 NCAA tournament appearances. Georgia will face Villanova or Purdue in the West Regional in Seattle.
Baylor 91, Florida 76
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Sophia Young scored 17 of her 23 points in the first half and Baylor beat Florida 91-76 in the NCAA tournament to advance to the round of 16 for the first time in school history.
Fourth-seeded Baylor (26-8) will meet top-seeded Tennessee in the Midwest Regional in Norman, Okla., next week.
The Lady Vols beat DePaul 79-59 to advance to the round of 16 for the 23rd consecutive year.
