NEW GLOUCESTER – The Spurwink Institute at Pineland Farms is launching a fund-raising event in memory of long-time Gray resident and community leader Cindy Carroll.
The Saturday, June 5, event will include a 10K road race, a 5K trail walk and a 1K Kids’ Fun Run at Pineland Farms. Proceeds will go into a special scholarship fund to underwrite the cost of the Spurwink Institute training for educators who work with students with special needs. Teachers from Gray and New Gloucester will be given first preference for these scholarship funds.
Michael Higgins, the school’s chief executive officer, said the staff decided to channel their grief into something productive and do something to honor Carroll’s life. She was the project manager of the institute’s ALLTech division at the time of her death. Before that, she worked for nearly two decades for Gray-New Gloucester High School. She is survived by her husband, Mike, and two sons, Sean and Jamie.
Cindy’s Walk will be held on Saturday, June 5. Registration will begin at 8 a.m. and the 10K road race, 5K trail walk and 1K Kids’ Run will begin at 9 a.m. A reception will be held after the races, which will include presentations to winners, prizes to all the participants who raise certain levels of contributions, giveaways and a program that will remember and honor Carroll. At that time, the institute plans to dedicate its state-of-the-art technology classroom in Carroll’s name.
