LEWISTON – On Saturday, March 27, Amanda Eyre Ward will read from and sign copies of her first book, “Sleep Toward Heaven.”

The session will be from 11 a.m. to noon at Mr. Paperback.

“Sleep Toward Heaven” is a portrait of three women’s lives, which are touched by violence, loss and self-destructiveness and irrevocably connected by one crime and a brutal Texas summer on death row.

Celia Mills, an Austin librarian, will try anything to forget her husband who was murdered by Karen Lowens. Lowens awaits her execution on death row in Gatesville. Dr. Franny Wren flees her engagement and returns to her hometown, Gatesville, where she takes up her uncle’s work at the prison.

Through each of these, Ward raises questions, in an uncompromising way, of what it means to love and to forgive.

Ward, who was born in New York City, lives in Waterville.

Anyone interested in a signed copy of either book, but unable to attend the reading and signing, may pre-purchase a copy to be signed. People can contact Mr. Paperback, 783-2273, for further information.
