LEWISTON – Police on Thursday arrested a man suspected of robbing a Main Street convenience store and then a doughnut shop in a crime spree that garnered him beer and money.

Walter Kelley, 38, of 16 Hillside Lane, was charged with two counts of robbery. Police say Kelley robbed the Irving Mainway at 11 p.m. Wednesday night and the Dunkin Donuts three hours later.

A gun was displayed during both heists but investigators believe the weapon used was a toy. No one was hurt in either robbery.

A toy gun was recovered when police found Kelley inside a vehicle that was stopped near Pleasant Street Trailer Park shortly after the second stick-up.

At the time of the hold-ups, Kelley was free on bail stemming from a recent robbery committed in Rockland. As part of his conditions of bail, Kelley was required to check in at the Lewiston Police Department.

Investigators said Kelley showed up for his appointments, until recently. In February, he was arrested at his home on charges of failure to pay legal fees and for violating probation.

On Thursday, Kelley was scheduled to appear in Knox County Superior Court to face the earlier robbery charge. He was expected to be sentenced to prison at that hearing.

When the Irving store at 674 Main St. was robbed Wednesday night, the suspect told a store clerk he had been in prison and that he was known to police. He grabbed a 12-pack of beer and demanded money before fleeing on foot.

It was unclear whether similar comments were made during the 2:20 a.m. heist at Dunkin Donuts. However, police said evidence left behind at the Irving Mainway quickly led to Kelley as a suspect. Witnesses to both robberies later picked him out of a photo lineup.

Kelley offered no resistance when police arrested him on Pleasant Street, police said. He was being held at the Androscoggin County Jail Thursday night on $25,000 cash bail.
