RUMFORD – Katherine Harvey was ecstatic Monday after learning how much money volunteers raised at Saturday’s Bowl for Kids’ Sake fund-raiser.

Although it fell short of the $20,000 goal, Harvey said the $15,295 raised by sponsors and teams was great.

In addition to sponsors, who raised $5,735, 167 bowlers on 53 teams at Oxford Lanes raised $9,560.

The top three pledge-getting teams were MeadWestvaco with $2,308, Wal-Mart with $2,276.50, and Hannaford with $1,188.

Tim Lecours, the top adult fund-raiser, earned a home computer, and Brett Whittemore, the top youth fund-raiser, earned a DVD surround sound system, Harvey said.

The $15,295 was 13.3 percent higher than last year’s $13,271 raised by sponsors and 161 bowlers on 51 teams.

In the past four years, participating volunteers and sponsors of Bowling for Kids’ Sake fund-raisers have raised $49,325.

Bowling for Kids’ Sake raises money for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Western Maine’s mentoring programs, which have been in the River Valley area for the past nine years.

Over 200 youth are served, Harvey said, by two programs of community mentoring and site-based mentoring in schools.

“Monies raised from this fund-raiser stay in this area,” she added.
