Dear Sun Spots: I am on a fixed income, and I need your help.

I was a patient in an oral surgery office and the oral surgeons have since parted ways. I want to transfer my records with the doctor who left. When I called the surgery office, they told me there would be a charge of $60. I feel like I am being penalized for going with the other surgeon.

Is this normal? What if I wanted my records sent to Boston or what if I had moved? This charge just doesn’t seem justified. Who comes up with this fee? Looking forward to your response. – Fixed Income, No Town.

Answer:
In addition to responses from readers, Sun Spots contacted the Maine Board of Dental Examiners, (207) 287-3333, which regulates dentists and what they charge. The 121st Maine Legislature signed a new law that allows dentists to charge $10 for the first page and 35 cents for each additional page of dental records. These fees are contained in 22 MRSA subsection 17.11-A and allow for fees, charges for records to be applied to either the patient or their authorized representative. As you can imagine, it takes personnel, time and equipment to process medical/dental records.

Dear Sun Spots: If there is somebody in the Lewiston-Auburn area that’s planning to make a garage or lawn sale for the poor or elderly, please contact me. I’ve got some items that I want to give, but it must be sold to benefit them.

If you could please pick it up now, I’d like that better because I’m planning to move into a small apartment and I would have the room to store it until then.

Please call me at (207) 783-3076 to make arrangements. – E.D.C., Lewiston.
