WOODSTOCK – An article asking people to voluntarily support recycling passed at the Woodstock town meeting on Monday. The article was also passed at the Greenwood town meeting held on March 27.
The Sun Journal incorrectly reported on Wednesday that the measure failed in both towns.
“It was like, “Dewey Wins,'” said Woodstock Town Manager Vern Maxfield, referring to the erroneous headline reported in the Chicago Daily Tribune on Nov. 3, 1948, announcing the defeat of President Harry S. Truman.
Greenwood Town Manager Carol Whitman said the same article appeared in both town warrants.
The towns share recycling and a waste facility.
“The article was created just to ask the people to commit to recycling more,” Whitman said.
“Greenwood is not a mandatory recycling town. We asked them out of the goodness of their hearts to recycle, and the 78 voters there unanimously agreed.”
Maxfield said that Woodstock residents are getting better about recycling and hoped passing of the article would encourage them to get better.
He said voters listened to Selectman Steve Bies when he told them the cost factors involved in recycling, such as less tonnage hauled reduces costs and the possibility of getting more money back from the recycling of goods when there is a market for them.
