FARMINGTON – The SAD 9 board ruled unanimously Tuesday night that a middle school student caught with controlled substances should be suspended for the remainder of the academic year.

After deliberating in an executive session for more than an hour, the district’s lawyer, Ervin Snyder, announced that the middle school girl would be suspended for the balance of the school year for possessing and furnishing controlled substances on school grounds.

Besides the suspension, the student, who attended the hearing with her parents, was banned from district property for the rest of the year.

In order to be considered for readmission, Snyder said the girl must do a presentation to the school board showing improvement in anger management, drug awareness and in her academic studies.

In other business, the board accepted the resignations of a handful of teachers including: Mary-Sue Hayden of the Mallett School; Meridith Ranger, also of the the Mallett School, and Julie Adams of Cascade Brook School.

Kapoula Thompson, a Mount Blue Middle School teacher who has been on leave in his native Hawaii, informed the board by letter he would not be returning as planned.

Two field trips for forestry students from the tech center were approved. On May 13 and 14, students from the class will travel to Orono to compete in the Annual High School Loggers Meet.

Later in the month, the same 15 students will travel to Swan Island in Richmond to clear dead trees to make way for nature trails and a building site as part of a community service and hands-on learning project.
