NORTHAMPTON, Mass. (AP) – A former University of Massachusetts student was sentenced Wednesday to a year in jail for the death of her newborn son.
Jennifer L. Paluseo, 21, of Plymouth, pleaded guilty in February to involuntary manslaughter and illegally moving a human body. Paluseo also will serve 10 years’ probation, prosecutors said.
Prosecutors say her 9-pound, 2-ounce infant was still alive when Paluseo, then a 19-year-old freshman, put him in a plastic garbage bag and dumped him in a trash room after giving birth in a shower on May 1, 2002.
The body was discovered the next day by a worker on the Amherst campus when he picked up the trash.
Authorities said other dormitory residents had suspected Paluseo was pregnant, although she had denied it.
