The meetings are mandatory for those who wish to take their computers home.

FARMINGTON – The Mount Blue Middle School has announced times for two orientation meetings mandatory for parents of students who want to bring their Apple iBooks home later this spring.

On Tuesday night, the SAD 9 school board voted 11-1 in favor of allowing the 430 or so seventh- and eighth-graders at the school to bring their state-issued laptop computers home during a five-week trial period starting in late April.

If there is a low incident rate of damage to the computers during the test-run, the district plans to add a permanent take-home policy to the books.

In order for a student to take his/her laptop home, they must attend one of two orientation meetings along with a parent/guardian.

The first meeting is slated for 4 p.m. on Tuesday, April 6, and the second at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, April 7. Both will be held in the school’s cafeteria.

Parents and students must also sign for shared responsibility of the computer by filling out a sign-out form before removing their iBooks from school grounds.

Parents must also pay $100 toward the repair of any damage done to their child’s computer. After $100, the district will incur the cost.

“Having students take laptops home can only be a benefit to all by allowing students to gain the ability to complete projects at home, by demanding student responsibility, and by asking parents to become directly involved with student projects,” stated MBMS Principal Gary Oswald in a release.

“Sending the laptops home should help open up a better connection between home and Mount Blue Middle School.”
