The following area nursing home residents were also honored Thursday at the second annual “Remember ME” celebration at the State House. The event was sponsored by the Maine Health Care Association, which represents nursing homes.
• Joan Markey, of the Maine Veterans’ Home, South Paris. When 19, she entered the convent, but an unexpected family crisis forced her to leave. She later married a career Navy man and traveled with him. She began a teaching career and later moved to Norway. She was elected vice president of Maine’s Catholic school teachers union. She also was a hospital chaplain at Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston and began a hospice group in the Oxford Hills area. A cancer survivor, Markey was active in church women’s groups, formed a grief support group and taught religious education to children.
• Sister Gertrude Marie E. Michaud, 93, of Sarah Frye Home, Auburn. Born in Millinocket, she became a nun. In 1929 was assigned to teach at the Ava Maria Academy in Sabattus for 21 years. Later she was assigned to New York. After teaching thousands of students she retired in 1983 at age of 72. Despite her frailty, she continues to practice her religious life daily at the Sarah Frye Home.
• Edna Swan, 93, of Victorian Villa Rehabilitation and Living Center, Canton. An accident when she was two left her crippled. While under the care of social worker Margaret Chase Smith, 6-year-old Edna traveled to Philadelphia for education. Because of her disability, she was unable to attend high school, but was determined to have a normal life. On July 4, 1936, she married engineer Wilfred Swan in Dixfield. Before long they adopted three children. Always one to improvise, Edna carried her babies in a backpack while using crutches to walk, and washed floors by pulling herself along the floor with her hands. Today she is president of the resident council at the center.
