MEXICO – Wal-Mart employees in Mexico recently voted to support the community of Canton by donating $2,000 to the Flood Relief Fund. Relief efforts are being coordinated by Community Concepts Inc., a nonprofit community action agency serving Oxford, Androscoggin and Franklin counties.

“It was a whole store decision,” said Cheryl Roberts, Good Works coordinator for Wal-Mart in Mexico. “We had a meeting, and everyone decided that this is what they wanted to do.” Wal-Mart Corp.’s philosophy of giving allows each store to determine which organizations and projects it will support at the local level.

More than 40 homes in Canton were severely damaged by flooding last December, and many residents have been displaced. Community Concepts is involved in advocating for federal relief funds, as well as coordinating assistance to the victims.

“The generosity of Wal-Mart and its employees is inspiring, appreciated and so needed,”

said Koriene Low, director of Community Services for Community Concepts. “This

donation will really make a difference to those who were devastated by this event.”

“We’re glad to help our neighbors,” said Roberts. “It’s the right thing to do.”
