Officials hope to see the program take root in Jay and Livermore Falls.

Town managers in Jay and Livermore Falls are proposing an Adopt-a-Spot program to beautify the towns.

Livermore Falls Town Manager Alan Gove and Jay Town Manager Ruth Marden are hoping businesses, community organizations and individuals step up to volunteer to maintain areas. Their tasks could range from weeding and mowing to planting, depending on group interests and the needs of the particular spot adopted.

Gove said he had read about Pittsfield’s efforts to beautify its town and thought it would be a good way to dress up Livermore Falls and Jay.

It would be up to people to suggest areas they’d like to adopt, Gove said, but the managers also have some ideas if people are looking for them.

Goals of the program are to:

• Increase participation in the beautification of Jay and Livermore Falls.

• Promote environmental awareness, recycling and litter control.

• Provide the ability for groups of any size to regularly volunteer and set their own schedule.

• Provide an opportunity for fellowship and positive interaction.

• Provide an opportunity for all to show support and pride in the community.

• Recognize the efforts of participating businesses, organization and individuals.

The managers plan to sign up those wishing to participate during April, with the program’s kickoff during May 15 to 22.

All participating spots will be judged by the Chamber of Commerce during the first week in September. Awards for the best sites will be presented at the September chamber meeting.

If an individual, a business or organization wants to help but doesn’t have time, they could consider donations of materials or products, which could be used in maintaining spots around towns.

If an area is in a public right-of-way, it would require approval from the Landscape Unit of the Maine Department of Transportation. Town managers would work with volunteers on the process and submit the proposal to the state.

Applications to Adopt-a-Spot are available at the town offices. If more information is needed, people can contact Gove at 897-3321 or Marden at 897-6785.
