ACADIA NATIONAL PARK, Maine (AP) – A 63-year-old man from Washington state has died after riding his bicycle into a barrier gate on Park Loop Road.

Stephen Kennedy of Washougal, Wash., was riding a bicycle at 3:45 p.m. Saturday with his son Andrew when he crashed into the gate near the intersection of Otter Cliffs Road, according to park officials.

The barrier is used to stop vehicle traffic from using the western section of Park Loop Road in the winter months.

Kennedy was transported to Mount Desert Island Hospital, where he died Saturday night, according to park officials.
