DOVER-FOXCROFT (AP) – A Sangerville man who served four years behind bars for breaking into homes and stealing underwear from women on his newspaper route is going back to prison.

Gregg McInnis, 30, was sentenced Monday to another year in prison for violating his probation by taking a job as a newspaper carrier and for being booted from a sex offender treatment program.

McInnis was convicted in 1999 of four counts of burglary, three counts of theft and one count of violation of bail conditions.

He was accused of breaking into homes in Guilford and Sangerville and stealing 139 pieces of women’s clothing, including panties, bras, swimsuits, prom gowns and other items. Some of the homes were on his newspaper route.

When probation officer Dan Dickson learned last month that McInnis was delivering newspapers, he visited the Sangerville man’s home and found a bag containing women’s undergarments and pornography.

McInnis told Judge Kevin Stitham on Monday that he bought some new undergarments through an online Victoria’s Secret catalog and obtained the rest from his garbage route.

Two specialists testified McInnis’ actions were of concern.

Dr. Gary Rasmussen, a psychologist who evaluated McInnis, said the Sangerville man ventured into voyeurism as a teenager when he would look through windows and watch women undress. He later became familiar with their schedules so he could burglarize their homes, he said.

“I don’t think he should have a job that puts him on the doorsteps of residences,” added William Donahue of the Behavioral Health Centers Specialized Sexual Offenders program.

McInnis’ older brother, J.R. McInnis, spoke on his brother’s behalf. He said he thought his brother took the extra job to help the family after their mother died from their cancer and their father also developed the disease.
