Police say Jonathan Ivers had been selling drugs to other Bates students.
LEWISTON – A Bates College student has been charged with selling marijuana from his dorm room.

Police say Jonathan Ivers sold pot to other Bates students for at least a year and a half before he was caught.

The Maine Drug Enforcement Agency began investigating him after college officials contacted police and told them about their suspicion that Ivers was dealing drugs on the campus.

Drug agents raided Ivers’ room in John Bertram Hall on Feb. 26.

According to Officer Roland Godbout, the agents confiscated 10 ounces of marijuana, a scale and an undisclosed amount of money.

Ivers was not arrested at the time. Drug agents handed the case to the District Attorney’s Office, and Ivers was indicted Tuesday by an Androscoggin County grand jury.

Selling that amount of marijuana is usually a misdemeanor.

Ivers was charged with aggravated trafficking in scheduled drugs, which is a felony, because his dormitory is located within 1,000 feet of Lewiston Middle School.

The charge carries a maximum sentence of five years in prison.

Bryan McNulty, a spokesman for Bates College, said Ivers is not on campus at this time.

Whether Ivers will be permitted to continue his studies at the college will depend on the results of the college’s internal review of the situation, McNulty said.

Ivers is scheduled to make his first appearance in Androscoggin County Superior Court on May 7.
