The Farwell school bus entrance was made formally for buses only.

LEWISTON – Councilors have cleaned up some parking spaces around the city.

The City Council agreed to eliminate one parking space near the Lincoln and North streets intersection, to convert a space on Lisbon Street near the District Courthouse into handicapped parking and to impose a one-hour limit to a space in front of the St. Vincent de Paul thrift store on Walnut Street.

“There’s nothing connecting all of these pieces, except they all showed up on my desk at the same time,” said police Sgt. James Rioux. All of the changes were requested by the public, he said.

The city got rid of the Lincoln Street space because it blocked the view of cars leaving North Street, Rioux said. Limiting the space on Walnut Street to one hour should help the thrift store, he said.

There are no on-street handicapped spaces near the District Courthouse currently, Rioux said.

The council also voted to make the bus entrance in front of the Farwell school formally for buses only. Parents picking up their children had been blocking that driveway, he said. Parents will be directed to the school’s parking lot.

“It allows the buses to go where they’re supposed to go and be safe,” Rioux said.
