NEW PORT RICHEY, Fla. – Jessie Elizabeth “Betty” Burgess, 88, of New Port Richey, Fla., formerly of Greene, went to heaven on April 1.
Born in Greene, Aug. 1, 1915, the daughter of Roy T. and Mildred Foster Furbush, she was the widow of Edward E. Burgess, who died in February of 1994.
She was a member of the Greene Baptist Church and the Greene Grange. After graduating from Leavitt Institute in 1934, she worked for the U.S. Census Bureau doing census for the town of Greene by horse and on foot. She worked for Sawyer Farms at the ice cream stands and later at the Greene Post Office, until her marriage in 1941.
Her later employment was with the Greene IGA until her retirement in 1980.
She resided in New Port Richey, Fla. for the past 12 years.
Survivors include a son, Wayne Burgess and wife, Penny of Mechanic Falls; a daughter, Nancy Doyon and husband, Richard of New Port Richey, Fla.; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; sisters, Mildred Rideout of Greene and Inez Thompson of Chapin, S.C.; and many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by brothers, Milton and Lawrence. She was a thoughtful and caring sister, an amazing aunt and most of all, the best mother. She was an awesome grandmother and great-grandmother. She will be sadly missed.
