RUMFORD – Students at the Rumford Elementary School celebrated Read Across America Day on the 100th birthday of Dr. Seuss. On March 2, guest readers read to students, students selected a free book and Rumford Postmaster Jim Sylvain spoke to students about the new Dr. Seuss stamp.
Read Across America Day, an annual event sponsored by the National Education Association, encourages students, parents and community members to read. This year a Reading is Fundamental distribution took place in the library. Students chose a free book from a selection of books that included Harry Potter books, and popular series titles from Scooby-Doo to the Magic Treehouse.
Volunteers Jessi Arsenault, Becky Pingree, Katie Parise and fifth-graders, Alison Hutchins, Tiffany Libby and Ashley Jacques; and fourth-grader, James Boivin, assisted the school librarian, media specialist, Eileen Broderick, with the distribution.
First-grade teachers, Lyn Newell and Lynn Frost, assisted with the RIF program at Rumford Elementary School.
Rumford Postmaster Jim Sylvain told students about the new Dr. Seuss stamp. There are six characters on the Dr. Seuss stamp. After reading a Dr. Seuss book tothird-graders, Sylvain distributed idea sheets for students to create their own Dr. Seuss stamp.
Besides Sylvain, guest readers included Mary Pulsifer and grade-one students. Mary Dunton and Lynn Frost’s classes read to Head Start students who visited the school as part of the Read Across America celebration.
